Understanding Different Door Lock Options

You might not think that there is anything to think about when you need a new lock other than going to the hardware store and just buying a lock. However, we can tell you for sure that it is worth giving serious consideration to. We are talking about the safety and security of your home and loved ones. This means that your safety begins with the type of locks you have installed. If you do not have the right type of locks installed, you risk the possibility of someone breaking into your home. It is possible to find the right locks as long as you know what you are looking for. You shouldn’t only be concerned with the type of door locks that you buy but you should also consider the type of window locks that are installed.

Knowing what you are looking for before you head out to buy new locks would be helpful. Although you might know the name of some of the locks you look at, you might not know how they function. You might not even know which doors they should be used on. Some locks are interchangeable and could be used on various types of doors. With the right locks on your doors, it is possible to keep out an intruder. Here are some of the locks that we install most often:

Types of Locks

Deadbolt Locks

Lets start with the most obvious locks, deadbolt locks. You might not know this but the reason this type of lock is used most often is because they are the most durable. If you do not already have a deadbolt locks on your door, you can get what you need from Locksmith East Cobb. They are durable and affordable. There is no reason that you shouldn’t have them. There is a metal bolt that slides into the doorjamb. The locks latch controls the bolt. This latch is located inside the keyhole and inside the door. The one thing that many of our customers find interesting is that there are several different types of deadbolt locks available to them. There is a single deadbolt and a double deadbolt, which you may have heard of. There is also the captive and jimmy deadbolt locks, which are less known.

Jimmy Proof Deadbolts

This lock is installed on the on double doors. Like most others, the bolt is connected to the doorjamb bracket. This is what makes it much more difficult for someone to pull it apart. It has lock screws that are situated inside the door, along with the rim cylinder.

Single Deadbolts

This type of deadbolt is installed more often than the other types of deadbolt locks. The thumb turn is on the inside of the door and the keyhole is located on the exterior of your door.

Double Deadbolts

You will have to give serious consideration to whether or not you need or want this type of lock since a key is needed to unlock it from either side of the door. It has a cylinder on each side of the door. It lacks a thumb turn. It is risky in a emergency situation because if you’re unable to find both keys, you mind find yourself in serious danger.

Knob Locks

Most people have knob locks, whether on their front door, garage door, patio door or possibly a bedroom door. The knob is on either side of the door. One is where the door locks and the other is where the keyhole is located that lets you unlock or lock the door. Prior to replacing your locks, you should know where the actual lock is. It requires a right-hand knob if your doorknob is situated to the right and a left-hand knob if it is on the left. Because a knob lock comes with its own locking mechanism inside, it is easily broken with a lot of force and with the aid of a hammer or just a rock and wrench. This type of lock should never be the primary lock on your home doors.

Lever Locks

The lever lock is often found on interior doors. They are provided in numerous colors and styles. They are designed to suit different customers style and preferences. If you have disabilities, this is a good lock to have. Lever locks don’t require a key to open the door. The only things that you’ll need to do are twist and push the button located on the face of the lock. It is simple for anyone to open and this is why it should be placed on the inside and not the outside of your home. Just like the knob lock, we wouldn’t suggest that you use this lock as your primary front door lock. They are easily broken and should only be accompanied by a deadbolt lock.

Keyless Locks

Many commercial businesses have keyless locks. This type of lock is appreciated by so many these days that manufacturers have made it possible for everyone to have one, even homeowners. They are no longer as expensive as they used to be and now that there is such a large demand for them, they are being offered in various price ranges. So you are probably wondering how you are able to open the door if there is no key. A keypad is installed and you are able to unlock the door by putting in a predetermined code, which you can change as you see fit or a fob key. They are just as secure as deadbolt locks and are usually electronically controlled. Any reputable locksmith service will be able to install your keyless lock. Just make sure they explain the differences between the different ones that are available to you. When you are equipped with enough information, you’ll be able to make a well-informed decision about which type you would like to have them install for you. If you have ever lost a key, you’ll really appreciate having a keyless lock.
